Department of History BK21 Inaugural Book Talk, Hanyang University.
Topic : Geoeconomics - Global Economic Justice from Roosevelt to Trump
Lecturer : Martin Daunton (University of Cambridge)
Date : 2026.05.21(THU)
Venue : Hanyang University, College of Humanities Room 205(No.508)
The Department of History holds its inaugural book talk series with a special lecture by Martin Daunton to celebrate the publication of the Korean translation of The Economic Government of the World, 1933-2023. [Korean title: <<권력과 통치: 누가 세계를 지배하는가?>> (랜덤하우스코리아, 2026)]
In this monograph, Daunton traces the origins of today's political and economic polycrisis from a long-term perspective. Instead of the short-term explanation such as the collapse of neoliberal financialisation and hyper-globalisation since the 1970s, he invites us to re-examine the contested visions of the post-war global economic order.
By analysing economic actors within the contemporary political and economic contexts, Daunton identifies non-economic factors such as knowledge, discourse, and practice beyond material interests in the making of economic government of the world. Furthermore, incorporating critique of Eurocentrism, he sheds light on the way in which the Global South (including South Korea), a region often marginalised in the literature, contested and engaged in the visions of the world economy.
In this talk, Duanton examines the multiple, colliding visions of global economic government and presents various alternatives available for us today to challenge the mainstream ideas of economism. He also explores the shifts in the discourse of 'economic justice' from Roosevelt to Trump and the underlying political economy.
This event provides an AI-based interpretation and will be streamed via Zoom.
